Hello.

This is the last show I will do from The Netherlands and it will be, again, a cover’s show. This time, however, it’ll be only covers of a specific song, one that I already featured twice in this blog — Little Wing, by Jimi Hendrix (look it up!). It shows that there’s something about me and this song, doesn’t it? So here it goes, Little Wing covered six times, by six different artists:

The Corrs

Eric Clapton and Sheryl Crow

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Monte Montgomery

So, which one do you prefer?  I’m particularly fond of the Sting’s and Monte Montgomery’s versions, but all of them just go to show one thing: the original is a great song :)  Feel free to post your opinions in the comments section.

See you next week.

Hello.

One more show from The Netherlands, one more show prepared in a hurry. This is another of my discoveries shows, this time about another artist I found while browsing YouTube searching for videos for this blog. The first time I heard Cat Power I was immediately drawn to her voice and the simplicity and nakedness of her music. That’s the kind of sound that always makes me pay attention, maybe because it makes it easier to notice the feelings of the artists and their pleasure in playing.

Anyway, here is a random sample of Cat Power’s music:

  • He War
  • Lived in Bars
  • Cross Bones Style
  • He Was A Friend Of Mine (Bob Dylan cover)

Hello. I don’t know much about classical american music, but these I know. It’s four songs that always make me dream and, because I’m a little homesick and blue and miss my family and all that, I feel it’s the kind of show that reflects the way I feel right now.

Sorry for being so terse today. Just wanted to publish something, even though I don’t feel very much like writing and searching the web for links and cool stuff to say. Promise I’ll make it up to you in the next shows. See you next week.

Line-up:

  • What A Wonderful World and As Time Goes By, by Louis Armstrong
  • George Gershwin’s Summertime, sung by Scarlett Johansson
  • Over The Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz, by Judy Garland

    Hello.

This show takes us back to the late eighties or early nineties, in the second series of songs from the Indie movement. Today my focus revolves around two bands, The Pixies and the Throwing Muses, and their offspring, Belly, of Throwing Muses members Tanya Donnely and Fred Abong, and The Breeders, who counted with PixiesKim Deal and Tanya Donnely. All the four bands signed for the independent label 4AD Records.

This show is in the format of the last one, a compilation of the chosen songs available in Mixwit. The songs are:

    1. Pixies - Here Comes Your Man
    2. Throwing Muses - Red Shoes
    3. Belly - Gepetto
    4. The Breeders - Cannonball

Thanks for the visit. You may return next Sunday for more music from my life :)

Show #29 (Back to the cassette)

Hello.  Today we have a different kind of show.  Instead of a series of YouTube videos I prepared a selection of songs, a mix, using the Mixwit service, which I discovered while reading a blog just this friday.  I don’t know if I will switch to this format or stay with the old one — I guess it will depend on its reliability and also on what you think.

My opinion is that it is closer to the original purposes of this blog, being something like a radio show, in that it is just a sequence of songs and not a collection of videos.  If you have an opinion on this subject, whatever it is, please leave it in the comments section of this article.

For the first show in this format I just collected four available songs from some bands I love:

    1. ‘Til Tuesday - Voices Carry
    2. Edie Brickell & New Bohemians - What I Am
    3. Blind Melon - No Rain
    4. The Black Crowes - Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye

Hope you enjoyed it. See you next Sunday.

Hello. As I said, on the last show, I’m in The Netherlands for almost a week now. Fortunately I have an Internet connection and enough bandwidth to keep making shows for Not a podcast. Today’s show is the second in the Movies’s series and will feature four songs that, although commercial songs on their own, I immediately associate with some movie I have seen.

The first is Pitbull Terrier, by Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Band, that appears in Emir Kusturica’s crazy film Black Cat, White Cat.

The second song I want to present is Roxanne, by The Police, that Eddy Murphy tries to sing in the first of the 48 Hrs. series.

Next, we have Berlin singing Take My Breath Away, the theme from Top Gun.

Finally, I will end the show with Pretty in Pink, by The Psychedelic Furs, from the 80’s teenage cult movie with the same name.

And that is all for today, see you next Sunday.

    Show #27 (Unthemed 5)

Hello. A day later than usual, I’m releasing the fifth unthemed show of Not a podcast. This show almost wasn’t, as this last week was a little crazy here, and the time hasn’t been much. Nevertheless, I felt I had to make this show, because I don’t know if I will have the time or even the possibility of keep doing this in the next few weeks — I will be travelling to Den Helder, The Netherlands, as part of my job.

Anyway, I prepared this — meaning I did the research, chose the bands and the songs and wrote the introduction — in the last hour, so it’s possible that it will sound a little inconsistent. But I chose four great songs from four of my favourite bands, so I hope you enjoy the show.

Let’s start with a great classic by a classic band, Hey You, by Pink Floyd.

Great, isn’t it? Now, to speed it up a bit, New Order in Bizarre Love Triangle.

I know REM for over twenty years now and, although I still like their latest work, what I really love are the first albums, up to Out of Time. This song is from Green and I think it’s one their best: Orange Crush.

To end the show, I chose This Is The One, by The Stone Roses. Just because it’s a perfect song.

And this is the end. Let’s see how it goes in The Netherlands and, if I have the time and the required bandwidth, I will do my best to have a nice show for you next week. See you!

Hello. Today I bring you four covers of songs from the greatest bands of all time, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

The first song is a collaboration between Bananarama and three british comedians, the duo French & Saunders and Kathy Burke, for a charity project.  They are singing Help from The Beatles, or at least trying to…

Next, we have The Primitives singing The Rolling Stones’ hit As Tears Go By followed by another Beatles song, With a Little Help of My Friends, sung live by Joe Cocker.

Finally, the second Rolling Stones song, Wild Horses, beautifully interpreted by The Sundays. Stay well, see you next Sunday.

Hello. Santogold is an artist I’ve been hearing a lot at my favourite radio station lately, after what I  started collecting her songs in the notebook I use to prepare the shows for this tubecast.  As this is being a crazy weekend at home — that’s the reason for publishing this show so late — I decided to take the first entry in the Discoveries note and simply use it.  So, here are four nice, although a bit strange, songs by Santogold.  Hope you like it.
