Show #15 (Covers)

Hello. The first podcast I followed regularly, downloading every episode to listen in my mp3 player, was the Undercover Songs Podcast. I still have most of the episodes in my hard-disk and listen to them occasionally. Like the authors, I also have a kind of strange love for covers, that I intend to demonstrate in this show. Most of these songs were found while searching in YouTube for something else (the exception is the Cowboy Junkies song). So, here they are, the four cover songs I chose for today:

The first song is Paul Simon’s Boy In The Bubble, played by The Blue Aeroplanes:

Next, Tori Amos sings I Don’t Like Mondays, from the Boomtown Rats:

Fiona Apple sings The Beatles’s psychedelic hymn Across The Universe:

And finally, Neil Young’s Powderfinger interpreted by my favourite band, the Cowboy Junkies:

This is all, hope to be in your company for next week’s show.

That’s a great collection! I always loved Tori Amos’ version of the “I don’t like Mondays”, and the Fiona Apple song is great. I didn’t know the other two covers yet, though, but I especially like the Cowboy Junkies’ version of “Powderfinger”, so thanks for introducing me to that. :)

  2. As I said above, and have been saying everywhere I can in this blog, the Cowboy Junkies are my favourite band. They are also a never ending resource of covers, as they started as a covers’ band — their first album had only one original song in nine and the second, to this day their best known album, 5 in 12. Not to mention that their first and greatest hit was a cover of Lou Reed’s Sweet Jane (already featured here, in the pilot show) :)

If you like covers, as it seems ;) , you may want to check the Undercover Songs podcast I mentioned in the article. In fact, I may publish a special show tomorrow with a haunting cover of Satisfaction (Rolling Stones) that I first heard there — it was programmed to be in the last show… but I forgot about it while I was writing.
