Show #17 (42 years old)
Hello. Today is my 42th birthday and as such I prepared a different show for the occasion. To remind me of the old days, when I was a child or early teenager, instead of pop/rock bands I will present the theme songs from some animation series I grew up with. I hope you enjoy it and, if you’re about the same age as I am, maybe it will bring some memories to you too. So, here we go.
The first two series are from my early youth and, as was usual in those days in Portugal, they were still played in the original language — Vicky the Viking was in german and Heidi in japanese. Probably because of that fact I still love the sound of those languages, even when people around me usually find german too rough or japanese too strange. Here are the two series opening scenes:
Next, I have two of those timeless, ageless cartoons: Peanuts, the most funny, imaginative and self-analysing band of kids of all times, and Pink Panther, a cartoon cat that, oddly, doesn’t get beaten or exploded all the time
Now, two series that I saw when I was a little older. The first, 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother was probably the first dubbed show that I saw — and one that made me cry endless sunday afternoons — and Dogtanian, which had a theme song that I can still whistle (and play single-note in the guitar) even now. Both themes are in portuguese, because that’s how I first heard and remember them.
Finally, the best series of all time, at least in my opinion, also in the original japanese — it wasn’t dubbed at first probably because it was destined to a somewhat older audience than the two above. Here it goes, Future Boy Conan:

Tenho 25 anos e vi todas estas séries na minha infância…
Não haja dúvida que a televisão era uma merda ainda há cerca de 15 anos atrás…
Não estou, de forma alguma, a dizer que as séries eram más! Mas isto só prova como levamos com repetições atrás de repetições durante anos sem conta!

Luís says that portuguese television does a lot of reruns, because he is 17 years younger than I am and still remember all these shows. Well, I suppose that happens with most of tv networks around the world.
Anyway, having a daughter of nine, I now watch some animation series with her and, with some notable exceptions (like Braceface), there’s no way any of those shows beat the content (stories), animation quality and humour of those oldies
Either that or I’m getting old…
